Our Awards are a recognition of highly qualified women cardiologists who are taking action to improve patient care in their specialty. These awards offer targeted funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities. By providing support and visibility to talented women, we hope to develop a more equitable healthcare workforce.
Globally, the number of women in leadership positions in medicine is consistently low. The reasons for this are well-documented, and the consequences are severe, both for women in practice and women in training. Women physicians fall behind their male counterparts in terms of professorship rank, compensation, editorial board participation, and clinical trial leadership. These disparities are particularly stark when considering advanced medical subspecialties such as cardiology. Women in these subspecialties also report a notable lack of access to adequate mentorship opportunities despite mentorship being a vital contributor to equity among care providers and the diversity of key opinion leaders.
The awards escalate a highly qualified group of women physicians by providing them with funding, targeted mentorship, and a suite of professional advancement opportunities. These awards have the potential to expeditiously increase the number of women in visible leadership positions, poised to shepherd more women into these subspecialties and create a more equitable workforce for the future.
Mentorship is consistently identified as a key factor in career success for women cardiologists.
These awards develop mentorship pairs with a unique global focus, joining an experienced mentor physician with a mentee who is currently in fellowship training. These cross-institutional pairs work together to advance the field of cardiology and the specific goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Each award is sponsored by a partner organization in a particular area of clinical interest.
These prestigious awards aim to support and promote high-potential women physicians with growing interest and experience in clinical trials. They enhance the visibility of women in clinical trial leadership and create professional connections that foster future success.
Run in partnership with the Global CVCT Forum, winners are invited to attend the CVCT Forum and feature prominently in the faculty and make connections with world-leading trialists.
Since the program began in 2020, Women As One has distributed over $1.7 million in medical funding grants to high-potential women cardiologists.
Our Awards are uniquely targeted at identifying and proactively resourcing a select group of high-potential women physicians. Through the awards, we advance more women in their careers and ultimately into leadership positions, effectively breaking the cycle of underrepresentation for future generations.
Since their creation in 2020, there have been different award categories, which are detailed below.

Furthermore, our support of award winners does not end with the award cycle. We are committed to amplifying the work of our Award recipients throughout their careers.
Applicants are reviewed by a committee of experts determined by Women As One. The committee will choose a short list of finalists who may participate in video interviews before the award winners are selected.
No, in order to create new connections through the Awards, we pair Mentor and Mentee applicants from complimentary subspecialties.
Each Award typically has a specific clinical focus and is therefore open to physicians within specific subspecialties. These specialties will vary by year but are typically within cardiology and related subspecialties. Mentees should be current Fellows, and mentors should have over ten years of practical experience.
