Boston Scientific – Identifying future thought leaders at TCT 2023

The challenge

Women continue to face systemic barriers in the field of cardiology, often missing out on industry collaborations, procedural leadership roles, and other professional growth opportunities. Boston Scientific recognized this persistent gender gap and wanted to take meaningful action to be part of the solution. In preparation for TCT 2023, one of the largest gatherings in interventional cardiology, the company sought to identify and engage women cardiologists who are potential future thought leaders. Their goal was to both raise awareness of career pathways within the industry and to expand their own pipeline of diverse, qualified collaborators.

To achieve this, Boston Scientific sought out the expertise of Women As One, due to their commitment to advancing gender equity in cardiology and creating more inclusive environments for women cardiologists around the world.

The Women As One solution

Working together, Women As One and Boston Scientific developed a strategy to engage talented women in cardiology by creating a visible, high-value opportunity at the TCT 2023 conference. Together, we designed a panel event focused on practical steps for entering and succeeding in industry partnerships. The panel took place at the Boston Scientific booth inside the exhibition hall, offering an open and welcoming space for attendees to learn more about professional development opportunities with the company.

To ensure the panel aligned with Boston Scientific’s strategic priorities, Women As One curated a list of potential speakers using our Talent Directory. We identified women cardiologists whose profiles reflected the leadership potential Boston Scientific was seeking. The final agenda included compelling insights on building industry collaborations, increasing visibility in the field, and navigating the path from clinician to future thought leader.

The results

The breakfast panel drew over 50 participants, with half staying afterward to network directly with Boston Scientific representatives. One of the panelists, a junior cardiologist and former participant in the Women As One CLIMB program, captured the attention of Boston Scientific and has since gone on to work with the company on further projects.

Through this collaboration, Boston Scientific not only engaged with future thought leaders in cardiology but also gained ongoing access to a vetted network of women cardiologists through the Women As One Talent Directory. This establishes a sustainable foundation for ongoing collaboration and future partnership opportunities.

This initiative demonstrates how targeted industry engagement, when conducted thoughtfully and inclusively, can accelerate progress toward achieving gender equity in cardiology. By partnering with Women As One, Boston Scientific demonstrated a clear commitment to breaking down barriers for women in cardiology and investing in future thought leaders.

Separately, we can bring about change. Together, we are moving the needle, building a more inclusive future for women cardiologists and reshaping the landscape of cardiovascular medicine.

Women As One is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the inclusion, development, and advancement of women physicians in cardiology. By creating opportunities and resources specifically designed to support women in the field, we aim to address long-standing gender disparities and foster a more equitable and representative cardiovascular workforce.

We believe that partnerships with industry organizations are essential to creating meaningful, systemic change. Through collaboration, we can amplify our reach, align on shared goals, and develop innovative initiatives that promote gender equity across all areas of cardiology, from clinical trials and leadership to education and visibility. If your organization is committed to making cardiology a more inclusive and diverse specialty, we would be delighted to explore potential opportunities for collaboration.
