Case Study: Global Cardiovascular Clinical Trialist Forum (CVCT)

Why Did We Collaborate?

Since 2020, Women As One and CVCT have worked together to assure stronger representation of women across the annual CVCT Forum. CVCT is a global conference focused on bringing the latest in cardiovascular clinical trial methodology, regulation and results together in a forum among the world’s leading cardiovascular trialists. As women are highly underrepresented among cardiovascular clinical trial leadership, it is important to increase opportunities for them to gain access to training and networking opportunities in this space.

What Did We Do?

Women As One participates in the CVCT program planning committee to help identify qualified women to serve as faculty members across CVCT. CVCT and Women As One also develop joint sessions each year, focusing on gender-based topics in cardiovascular research. In 2023, Women As One launched a new Research Scholars Award, which sends rising women trialists to CVCT and introduces them to top leaders in the field through dedicated networking.

What Was Our Impact?

In the first year of this effort, 27 women from the Talent Directory were selected to participate in CVCT, 93% of whom had not participated prior. Women As One continues to identify new, talented faculty for the program each year and crafts innovative joint sessions, including 2024’s session on successful trial design strategies for improved enrollment of women in clinical trials. Across the first two years of the award program, Women As One has sent 10 women trialists to CVCT, giving them meaningful access to global trial leaders through a networking luncheon.

Educational event collaboration

Women As One creates educational events to support the professional development of women physicians, focusing on the skills that may not be covered in traditional medical training, but are important towards professional advancement.

Case Study: RISE @ ESC Congress 2024

Why Did We Collaborate?

The inaugural Women As One RISE conference in 2023 drew over 150 women physicians and allies to New York for a full day of networking and professional development. As we entered development of RISE for 2024, we wanted to reach a more geographically diverse audience and felt moving the conference to Europe would be beneficial towards this goal. With a stated commitment to gender equity through their Gender Policy, and a huge global reach through their annual Congress, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) felt like the perfect organization to approach for partnership.

What Did We Do?

RISE @ ESC Congress 2024 took place one day before the start of the ESC Congress in London. The full-day event presented a diverse roster of speakers, including the CEO of the ESC, Jean-Francois Riffaud. Participants engaged in sessions on topics such as values-driven leadership, negotiating with power, navigating institutional culture, featuring several faculty from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School.

What Was Our Impact?

RISE @ ESC Congress 2024 drew over 300 registrants from more than 40 countries. Feedback from the program was overwhelmingly positive with ~90% of attendees reporting being satisfied with the content presented. This partnership allowed Women As One to reach a wider and more diverse audience of women in medicine and presented a united front with the ESC on supporting the global community of women in cardiology.

Advisory Board Participation

Women As One supports the work of academic and non-profit organizations and investigators by serving on project advisory boards. These efforts span across project initiation, delivery and evaluation. They include providing letters of support, review and feedback of project design from the perspective of gender-inclusivity, identification of women to serve in key project leadership roles, and general awareness raising through our communication channels.

Case Study: RESIL-Card

Why Did We Collaborate?

Led by the We CARE initiative, supported by a consortium of experts in public health and interventional cardiology, and funded by a grant from the EU4Health Work Programme, the RESIL-Card project aims to strengthen European healthcare systems to provide continuity of care for cardiovascular patients during and after crises. To strengthen their initial funding application, We CARE sought the support and input of Women As One as an Advisory Board member for the project.

What Did We Do?

After reviewing the RESIL-Card program design and approach, Women As One wrote an initial letter of support for the RESIL-Card funding submission for the EU4Health. Upon funding receipt, Women As One participates in ongoing Advisory Board meetings, serving to represent the perspectives of women across the project, and sourcing participation in project milestones and deliverables from the Women As One community as needed.

What Was Our Impact?

As an Advisory Board member of the successfully funded project, Women As One has thus far helped We CARE raise awareness about RESIL-Card through our communication channels and drove completions of an early-stage landscape assessment survey. We also helped identify an additional Advisory Board member from Ukraine, which was an initial funding requirement. Ongoing, Women As One will continue to support the delivery of milestones over the course of the 3-year project.

Co-sponsorship And Endorsement

Women As One engages in customized co-sponsorship and endorsement arrangements aligned with our mission to provide unique professional opportunities for women physicians. Our collaborators include prominent nonprofit and academic organizations across the field of cardiology with a mutual interest in either supporting our programs or events or gaining our support of theirs.

Case Study: Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) Co-Sponsorship of CLIMB Clinical EP

Why Did We Collaborate?

Women physicians are critically underrepresented in the subspecialty of cardiac electrophysiology. Additionally, research has shown that women physicians are less often presented with opportunities to access advanced procedural training. Women As One sought to create meaningful procedural learning opportunities for women in EP through our CLIMB Clinical virtual training program in 2021 and sought the support of the Heart Rhythm Society in reaching our target audience.

What Did We Do?

The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) partnered with Women As One to co-sponsor the CLIMB Clinical EP program, offering cross promotion of the program to their membership. In return, Women As One offered all program participants a one-year membership to HRS, creating a lasting network of connection and support for this group of women electrophysiologists through both organizations.

What Was Our Impact?

The collaboration was so successful, that it was extended to the additional 2022 and 2024 CLIMB Clinical EP program years. In total, 89 CLIMB participants received one year of HRS membership, with the option to continue their membership in subsequent years. They also had the opportunity to learn from top global faculty in the highly personalized CLIMB Clinical learning environment, expanding their knowledge, skills and network.
